Traveling Gavel

Origin

The Traveling Gavel Project was implemented by MWB Jim Woodward in his year as Grand Master (2006). The gavel was carved by MWB Bud McIntire of Progress Lodge #22. He served this jurisdiction in 1988. Photos of the gavel may be seen on the Progress Lodge #22 Photo Site. The gavel was initially awarded to Wasatch Lodge #1 but was quickly captured by Progress Lodge #22. It has been in motion ever since.

How To Capture The Gavel

The purpose of the gavel is to stimulate visits to lodge meetings.

• The Grand Master or, in his absence, the Worshipful Master of the Lodge holding the gavel, makes the decision to relinquish the gavel to a visiting lodge or lodges claiming it.
• A Lodge may claim the gavel by sending five or more brothers to visit any meeting of the Lodge currently holding it.
• The gavel cannot be claimed by a Lodge outside of Utah without the Grandmaster's approval.
• A Lodge holding the gavel for more than eight weeks shall return the gavel to the Grandmaster for disposition.
• The Grand Master may retrieve the gavel at any time.
